Age Comparison Timeline
The old "multiply by 7" formula is a myth. Dogs age very fast in year one, then slow down. A 1-year-old dog is actually closer to a 30-year-old human!
Large dogs age faster than small dogs. A 10-year-old Great Dane is very old, while a 10-year-old Chihuahua is still in middle age. Breed size matters a lot.
Knowing your dog's equivalent age helps you give them the right food, the right exercise, and the right number of vet check-ups for their life stage.
Most people have heard the rule: multiply your dog's age by 7 to get their human age. But this popular formula is simply not accurate. Modern science gives us a much better answer.
Researchers at the University of California San Diego found that dogs age very rapidly in their first two years, then the ageing process slows considerably. A 1-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a 30-year-old human. By age 4, most dogs are the equivalent of a 52-year-old human โ not 28 as the old formula suggests.
Large breed dogs age faster than small breeds. A 10-year-old Great Dane is considered very old, while a 10-year-old Chihuahua may still be in middle age. Our calculator accounts for this important difference โ giving you a much more accurate result than any simple formula.
Small breeds like Chihuahuas, Pugs and Yorkshire Terriers tend to live the longest โ often 14 to 18 years. They age more slowly after the first two years of life. A 10-year-old small dog is roughly equivalent to a 56-year-old human.
Large breeds like Labradors, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers age faster after puppyhood. They typically live 10 to 13 years. A 10-year-old large dog is equivalent to roughly a 66-year-old human โ a full decade older than a small dog of the same age.
Understanding your dog's life stage helps you give them the right care. Puppies need more food, more sleep and more vaccines. Senior dogs need gentler exercise, more vet check-ups and often a change in diet. Knowing your dog's equivalent human age is the best way to understand what stage of life they are really in.
