How Old Is My Dog in Human Years? The Real Answer
Most people have heard the rule: multiply your dog's age by 7 to get their human age. But this popular formula is simply not accurate. Modern science gives us a much better answer.
The New Scientific Formula
Researchers at the University of California San Diego found that dogs age very rapidly in their first two years, then the ageing process slows considerably. A 1-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a 30-year-old human. By age 4, most dogs are the equivalent of a 52-year-old human — not 28 as the old formula suggests.
Why Breed Size Matters
Large breed dogs age faster than small breeds. A 10-year-old Great Dane is considered very old, while a 10-year-old Chihuahua may still be in middle age. Our calculator accounts for this important difference — giving you a much more accurate result than any simple formula.
Small Dogs (Under 10 kg)
Small breeds like Chihuahuas, Pugs and Yorkshire Terriers tend to live the longest — often 14 to 18 years. They age more slowly after the first two years of life. A 10-year-old small dog is roughly equivalent to a 56-year-old human.
Large Dogs (Over 25 kg)
Large breeds like Labradors, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers age faster after puppyhood. They typically live 10 to 13 years. A 10-year-old large dog is equivalent to roughly a 66-year-old human — a full decade older than a small dog of the same age.
